Preparing for Hypersonic Flight

Stratolaunch Completes Talon-A Separation Test

Stratolaunch Completes Talon-A Separation Test
On May 13, 2023 the Stratolaunch team successfully completed its eleventh flight of Roc and first separation of the Talon-A vehicle, TA-0. The test was important for ensuring that Talon-A vehicles will cleanly and safely separate from Roc prior to powered flight. With this milestone complete, the company will progress to its first hypersonic flight of the TA-1 vehicle.

Meet some of the dedicated members of our team who are preparing Talon-A’s propulsion system for Mach 5+ flight.

Engine Hot Fire Test with Vectored Thrust

Engine Hot Fire Test with Vectored Thrust
Check out our third engine hot fire test, continuing the buildup test series in preparation for our first hypersonic flight. This is the first test that includes vectored thrust movement, which will allow us to shape Talon-A’s flight path to meet customer requirements for altitude and air speed.

Join us as we take a look back at 2022. From flight and ground test milestones to contract awards, the excitement is growing as we prepare for our first hypersonic flight in 2023!

First Engine Hot Fire Test

First Engine Hot Fire Test
Bringing a hypersonic test service to our customers is exactly what the U.S. needs to enable critical technology capabilities, leading to an ability to leap-ahead of our peer competitors. We’re doing just that using Ursa Major’s Hadley rocket engine, which will propel the Talon-A hypersonic testbed to Mach 5 and beyond. Check out the first hot fire of the Talon-A integrated propulsion system at our Mojave rocket test facility.

Pylon Release System Mass Simulated Drop Test

Pylon Release System Mass Simulated Drop Test
We put our pylon release system to the test by releasing an asset simulating properties of the Talon-A vehicle. This ground test serves as an additional proof point for how the release system will work in flight and ensure that the Talon-A vehicle will cleanly and safely separate from Roc during a mission.

Hypersonic Research: A National Imperative

Hypersonic Research: A National Imperative
Advancing hypersonic technology is imperative to the United States defense strategy. Former Chief Scientist of the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Mark Lewis and Stratolaunch Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Daniel Millman share their thoughts on the history, current affairs, and future of hypersonics. Dr. Millman also discusses how the Stratolaunch Talon-A, a reusable autonomous test vehicle, will be used to accelerate our nation's hypersonic flight test tempo, similar to the X-15 of the postwar era.
